KARACHI: Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) has unveiled a series of technological and operational initiatives aimed at enhancing port efficiency, strengthening security mechanisms, and improving customer experience, as part of its broader strategy to modernize terminal operations and facilitate trade.
According to details KICT has successfully implemented a mandatory biometric verification system for all drivers entering the terminal, achieving 100% registration. The initiative is intended to enhance security controls, ensure traceability of terminal access, and improve compliance with safety protocols. Industry observers view the move as a significant step towards digitizing gate operations and reducing unauthorized access to port facilities.
In another major development, KICT has introduced an integrated online invoice generation and digital payment system for its customers. The new platform allows shipping agents, importers and other stakeholders to generate invoices and make payments electronically, significantly reducing manual paperwork and processing times. The digitization of financial transactions is expected to improve transparency, enhance operational efficiency and provide customers with faster turnaround times.
The terminal has also undertaken measures to optimize yard utilization amid increasing cargo volumes. Working in close coordination with Pakistan Customs, KICT has shifted long-idling containers to customs-bonded off-dock facilities, freeing valuable yard space for active cargo operations. The move is aimed at improving container flow, reducing congestion and ensuring smoother cargo handling within the terminal.
Port industry experts note that efficient yard management remains critical for maintaining trade velocity and minimizing delays, particularly at a time when Pakistan’s maritime sector is facing growing pressure from rising cargo traffic and evolving supply chain demands.
KICT stated that these initiatives reflect its ongoing commitment to safety, digital innovation and operational excellence. The terminal operator emphasized that investments in technology-driven solutions are essential for improving service delivery and supporting the country’s trade and logistics infrastructure.
The latest measures form part of broader efforts by port operators worldwide to embrace automation and digitalization in response to changing customer expectations and increasing demand for efficient supply chain management. As one of Pakistan’s leading container terminals, KICT aims to strengthen its role in facilitating international trade while enhancing the overall efficiency of port operations.
Industry stakeholders believe that continued investment in digital systems, security enhancements and infrastructure optimization will be crucial for improving competitiveness and supporting Pakistan’s ambition to develop its ports into efficient regional logistics hubs.
